Pittsburgh Steelers’ safety Sean Davis has a dislocated finger according to the team. This is not a ‘major’ injury but it does indeed highlight potentially serious issue at free safety for the Black and Gold.
If Davis is gone for any extended period of time there is little behind him in the way of reliable depth. Many fans have been clamoring for Tre Boston, the current free agent, but wouldn’t you think they would have brought him in here by now if there were interested? Brain Allen has been moved to free safety but I’m not real sure the Steelers would have much confidence in him long term.
One guy to keep a hopeful eye on is Kameron Kelly who played at San Diego State then in the now defunct AAF witht he San Diego Fleet. He had a brief run with Dallas but was released last year prior to the preseason beginning. Expecting Kelly to be anything more than a preseason player right now is asking a lot but so far he’s flashed some potential. Regardless, the Steelers need to address this issue.
Yesterday was a huge day for quarterbacks not named Ben Roethlisberger. The first couple of days saw some serious struggles by both Josh Dobbs and Mason Rudolph.
There has been some speculation that the team could look to add a veteran QB if one of these guys can’t take command of the number two job. The good news is that both looked markedly better on Sunday. That’s not to say there weren’t some hiccups but overall it was a much better performance than Friday and Saturday real rooms design.
Rookie Diontae Johnson looks really good. His ability to get off the line of scrimmage and then accelerate has been impressive.
The first round of ‘backs on backers’ was yesterday and there were a couple of things of note. First, Ola Adeniyi was pretty much unblockable. Second, as we’ve been worried about, Zach Gentry struggled a a pass protector. Both James Conner and Vince Williams did not get reps in the drill.
JuJu Smith-Schuster seems to me to be quite the motivated young man. He looks better already than he did in his first two seasons. The sky is literally the limit.
Don’t look now but Artie Burns has played well in his first few practices.
Which leads me to this… Please keep in mind the Steelers have had three practices and just one in pads. There is a long way to go in Training Camp and in the preseason. The only thing we can guarantee at this point is that Ben Roethlisberger is likely going to be the starting QB. In other words, there are no guarantees about who is starting or about who is making the team just yet.
